Instructions for Homeowner Class Riding & Zero Turn Mowers
Wear appropriate safety equipment. Follow manufacturer’s recommendations (such as remove spark plug wire) before trying to remove the mower blade. If a riding mower, raise the deck to the highest position (although manufacturer instructions will often suggest that you take the time-consuming task of removing the deck you can use this tool effectively with only 4 inches of space under the outer edge of the deck). Place the tool (1) over the blade(2) allowing the stopping edge (3) to be installed on the outside edge of the mower deck. The retaining bolt (4) MUST be installed at this point. Now the blade can be loosened by first rotating it until the tool is solidly against an obstruction on the mower deck such as a wheel mount. When the blade can no longer move, apply as much force as needed to loosen blade nut or bolt. You can now remove and sharpen the mower blade.
To re-install blade, simply turn blade (2) and this tool (1) in the opposite direction as it was in taking it off. Allow device to again rotate slowly and strike mower deck obstruction securely. Tighten mower blade retaining nut or bolt to the manufacturer’s specification.
TIP: Homeowner class mowers may sometimes omit anti-scalping wheels to limit tool travel and can sometimes have extremely wide flanges around the deck. The BladeBoss Pro tool will still work–you can install it as shown below on the blade to the left. When loosening, as the tool moves to the wide spot, it will bind and the nut or bolt will loosen. When re-installing, as the blade rotates to the right it will again bind against the deck and the bolt will tighten. If the tool is tight against the deck, you may have to tap it with a mallet to loosen it.
TIP: The product features a heavy powder coated finish which protects the tool and minimizes any scratching of the mower surface. If you are concerned about possibly damaging the finish on your mower you can apply a piece of duct tape on the stopping edge (3). Typically you can install the tool on the underside of the deck as shown at right.
